Xbox 360 Repair: Opening The Console

by admin on July 14, 2009

Well, I had to fix my 360 again last night, so I decided to film a video about repairing it. The first step is obviously getting it open, and the Xbox 360 isn’t just held together with screws, so …

It may be your thermal paste. There is a special paste that fills the gap between the chips and the heatsinks. This paste fills in all the tiny gaps and greatly improves thermal flow away from the chip. The stock paste they use is really cheap and becomes dry and weak. Take your heatsinks off, use Goo Gone or a similar cleaner to remove the old paste until the surfaces are shiny, and then apply a good quality paste like Arctic Silver 5. This should get rid of the 2 rings.

Well unfortunately after cleaning out the dust and putting the box back together the only thing that happend was that I went from 2 red rings in about 20 mins to 2 red rings in about 1.5hrs…. I guess I’ll have to try something else, but hey, still a good instructional vid.

Wow, thanks so much. This is a very helpful video, and as much as some of these people complain about blah blah blah carpet and stuff I just want to say that I appreciate that there is no crappy music or hard to hear verbal instructions. Very good step by step help. I just took apart my box and cleaned it out. I was having 2 rings and I’m about to see if the dust was the issue.THANKS!

shit man, never open up or put ur xbox on carpet. the static fucks it up

CalcProgrammer1 July 14, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Prove it. In years of working on electronics on carpet I’ve never had a single issue with static. Have you ever even worked on any electronics? The metal chassis that everything is mounted to is grounded to protect the parts inside from static but even without it static is hardly a serious problem. As long as you take care not to get huge amounts of static it is perfectly OK to work on carpet. Discharging yourself is a good idea too, just touch a lightswitch or outlet or other ground first.

I removed the hard drive panel without much of an effort. Still in the process of opening the rest and repairing.
